Helping kids grow in faith

About Kai, Born to be Super by Joy Vee

How do your kids explain their faith at school? How can they let their friends know how much Jesus loves them, without coming across as weird?

The Kai series was written to help kids in this situation. It follows the faith journey of a young boy who knew he was born to be super, but no one else got the memo. A young girl in his class tells him that Jesus knows he was born to be super, and he begins to ask some big questions.

Who is Kai, Born to be Super written for?

This series is perfect for early readers 5-8 years old, and is great for families to read together, with conversation-provoking questions at the back. It’s designed for helping kids grow in faith in the real world.

Here’s what some reviewers have said about it:

An excellent book and a must read for all children! Joy Vee has an uncanny ability to explain the most complicated parts of our faith in the easiest and most relatable way to children. I read it in one sitting with my 7yr old, simply because he wouldn’t let me put it down! And there were many Aha moments for me as well. More importantly, it opened up conversations between me and my son about faith that I never knew how to have.
Full of Biblical truths for all ages, this book encourages us to pray for those around us and share Jesus’ love with them… A must read for 6-9-year-olds (and the rest of us too!) These books make great Christmas presents/Kids’ Church prizes, etc.

There are so many books out there. Why do I need this book?

Kai – Born to be Super will teach your kids:

  1. That God is interested in them, and their friends
  2. How to listen to God at school
  3. How to share the gospel quickly and simply.

It does this through story, which is a powerful method of communicating that kids will remember as they face challenges.

I’d love this. Can I read a Sample first?

Here’s a Sample from the beginning, before Kai comes to faith:

At lunch time, Kai watched the other children in the playground. They never wanted to play with him. He didn’t know why. He felt bad about Mrs Higgins leaving, and wondered if it was his fault. Why didn’t he fit in?

‘Kai, are you OK? You seem a bit upset,’ a gentle voice asked. Kai turned and saw Zoe.

Zoe was in his class, but Kai didn’t know her well. She’d moved into the area at the beginning of the year and was new to the school. She smiled at him.

‘Having a rough day?’

Kai sighed. ‘You wouldn’t understand.’ He turned and kicked a small stone. The stone bounced away. He thought Zoe had gone, so he was surprised to hear her, closer but quieter than before.

‘Kai, you were born to be super!’ she said.

Kai spun round and nearly knocked her over. Zoe’s face went red as he glared at her.

‘What did you say?’

‘I said,’ she whispered, ‘“you were born to be super”.’

‘How do you know? Why did you say that?’ Kai shouted, angry that Zoe could read his mind. Was she laughing at him? Was this a trick?

He glanced around but couldn’t see anyone else nearby. Zoe was staring at the ground. Finally, she took a deep breath and looked Kai in the eye.

‘Jesus told me to tell you,’ she said.

Kai and Zoe stared at each other.

‘Jesus? Like Jesus in the Bible?’ Kai asked. ‘Jesus told you I was born to be super?’

Zoe nodded.

‘You’re crazy!’ Kai yelled.

He pushed past her and strode towards the field where the boys were playing football. He was so annoyed. Jesus was just in story books. He lived a long, long time ago. Jesus didn’t talk to little girls in school about Kai. He didn’t know Kai. Kai never went to church or anything, except for the school Christmas Carol Concert.

Zoe’s words made him feel silly, like she was laughing at him. How dare she make up words like that? Try to be his friend by talking about a dead man? Zoe seemed like a kind girl, but obviously she was a little crazy.

I know, thought Kai. If she thinks Jesus is real, I’ll tell her to prove it. She’ll never be able to prove that, because it’s impossible. Kai felt satisfied with his plan.

Just then the bell rang, and Kai joined the other children running to line up. He made sure he was standing next to Zoe, even though that meant him pushing in. Zoe’s face was red, and she looked like she had been crying. Kai felt sorry for her for a second. Then he remembered his angry feelings and focused on them for a minute.

‘Prove it!’ he hissed, leaning forward as they walked back to their classroom.

‘What?’ Zoe was trying to hear what Kai was saying while keeping up with the rest of the group.

‘If Jesus talks to you – prove it. You have twenty-four hours.’

Kai felt great, like a villain in a movie. No, not a villain – he wasn’t one of the bad guys. He felt angry and powerful.

Turning his back on Zoe, he walked across the classroom, trying to think of a superhero that was angry and powerful, but still a good guy.
