Self-Editing Fiction Course

This isn’t just about having a great story idea, or even a great writing style. It’s not just about getting your first draft down and writing those incredible words: The End!

It’s having an understanding of writing craft – of how you can make your writing the best it can be, and it’s about effective editing!

Though we all need professional eyes on our work before publication, we believe many of the best editing tricks can be learnt and employed by the author themselves. Learning and paying attention to these skills as you write, and as you self-edit before submission, will make your work better. It will also increase your chances of being accepted for publication, will likely decrease the costs associated with getting your manuscript into the world, and will ultimately increase your reader’s enjoyment.

The course takes place through interactive, practical, online classes. You will get taught in real time. There will be opportunities for questions and we will workshop with examples. Our aim is for you to go away feeling confident about how to apply what you’ve learnt. The sessions will also be recorded so that if you miss one, you can catch up without having to wait for the next round.

There are 6 sessions, as follows:

1. Point of View and Proportion
2. Characterisation, Exposition and Balance
3. Structure, Plot and the Big Fat Lie
4. ‘Show and Tell’ and the Use of Senses
5. Dialogue Mechanics, Actions Beats and Interior Monologue
6. Sophistication in Language: Adjectives, Adverbs and Repetition

The course runs all year round, with manageable classes once a month on the 2nd Tuesday, for six months. You can jump on at any time, but the sessions begin in February and August. So, you could start in February with session one, and take every class until July, or you could start in March with session 2, and continue until August. You can also take one class at a time. The choice is yours!
