Broad Place Publishing

How we’re different

The business model for publishers is very narrow. Income is generated from large sales of best-selling books, or from asking the author to spend thousands upfront to cover the publishing and production costs. Broad Place Publishing is looking to do things differently.

We believe in the biblical principle that the worker is worth his wages. The worker includes the author and our staff. Each should be compensated fairly for their work. Money doesn’t grow on trees, but we do believe God provides – He will equip what He has called. Accordingly, we expect the author to contribute to our costs, but we do not charge huge, blanket fees upfront. Once the book is published, we pay much higher royalties to the author than they’d receive under a traditional model.

We work in partnership with the author and with the Holy Spirit at every stage of the process. A typical process might look like this:

01

Submission

We are open to submissions from anyone – regardless of whether you have previously been published or if this is your first venture. We have various options for submissions, depending on your aspirations, budget and type of manuscript. Submit to Us.

02

Manuscript Critique

Manuscript critique is an essential part of the publication process. Everyone needs feedback on their story/idea, whether they have never published or are a seasoned writer. If you approach us for a complete manuscript review, we will read your manuscript and give extensive feedback, including suggestions of the next steps, depending on your end goal. There is a charge for this service to compensate our time and expertise. Order a manuscript review.

03

Communication

Once we’ve reviewed your submission or critique request, we’ll get in touch as soon as possible with a personalised plan. If we feel the book is a Jesus-Centred, Kingdom book that we want to publish, we will have further discussions with you. If it doesn’t quite fit our remit, we are committed to helping you find another way to publish.

04

Transparency

If we choose to go forward with publishing, there will be a clear and transparent discussion about any costs which will be incurred and a partnership agreement drawn up on how these could be covered. We do not offer “packages”, which don’t take into account how ready the manuscript is. Rather, each manuscript will be individually assessed and costed depending on its length, genre and readiness for publication.

Though we cannot offer Author Advances, We are forward thinking and open to funding suggestions. At no point do we want lack of finances to be a barrier to a Kingdom book being released into the world.

05

Support

We will support you to prepare your work for publication and to raise any funds needed to assist the publication. Provision for each project will be prayed over.

The author will also be asked to share about Broad Place Publishing with their friends and followers, inviting them to partner with us to cover the costs of bringing the book into the world.

Once the manuscript is up to publication standard, we will arrange production of a genre-specific, quality cover for each edition (paperback/hardback/ebook/audiobook). We will conduct interior formatting for all applicable editions and arrange proofreading. A proof copy will be supplied for you to check over.

06

Publication

A release date will be agreed upon, with at least 6 weeks notice, so you can plan a successful book launch. We will support you through this process.

Heavily discounted Author copies can be purchased for you to sell in-person at your events, or to your friends, family and followers.

If you really want to make a splash, other advertisement opportunities, such as blog tours and press-releases can be arranged at cost.

We will undertake all legal work associated with the publication and schedule the book for worldwide distribution through every available platform.

Our Team

First and foremost, we are Christians. Our relationship with Jesus defines what we do and how we do it. We are not perfect, nor are we one of the “Big Publishers”, but if your heart is to see Christ’s kingdom advance through your book, then we may be the right fit for you.

Founding Partner

Joy Vee

Joy grew up in in Lincoln, in the East of England. Since the age of 18, she has had over 20 homes, living in Ukraine, Russia and now back in the UK. All of this travelling has given her a heart for missions, which continued in her work teaching English to refugees and asylum seekers. She has recently returned to Lincoln with her husband and 2 teenage children, where she also works with Acts Trust empowering people to get out of poverty.

Joy started writing stories with her nieces and nephews in mind. She wants to inspire kids to follow God themselves (not thinking it’s just an ‘adult thing’) and encourage families to walk out their faith together, even when they don’t have all the answers. Joy’s stories show ordinary kids wrestling with big questions and finding that Jesus is the most exciting adventure yet.

Joy is passionate about changing the face of Christian publishing and distribution. You’ll often find her at trade shows, badgering bookshop-owners and leading school assemblies. She’s the big ideas lady.

Partner

Natasha Woodcraft

Natasha grew up mostly in Bedford but spent some formative years in The D.R.Congo where she was inspired by the living faith of those around her through incredibly hard circumstances. After completing 5 A-levels including English literature, she went on to study Theology and now lives in Lincolnshire on a smallholding with her husband, 4 sons and a collection of animals.

Natasha started writing stories when her brain was too sleepy for non-fiction. She realised stories have power to communicate deep truth and transform lives in a way everyone can engage with. Her novels explore God’s redemptive purposes for messy people. Also a songwriter, Natasha peppers her emotional prose with poetry and song.

Natasha is passionate about the nitty-gritty. When she’s not weeding her vegetable garden, you’ll find her correcting commas, praying over prose and managing margins to the nearest millimetre.
